London Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) Published - June 2012

27 June 2012

We are pleased to inform you that we have today published a regional Public Health Outcomes Framework for all London local authorities.

The London PHOF brings together - for the first time - local data for indicators that are to be included in the national Public Health Outcomes Framework.

The Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) was launched by the Secretary of State for Health in January 2012. The PHOF focuses on two high level outcomes - Increased healthy life expectancy and Reduced differences in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy between communities through greater improvements in more disadvantaged communities. The two overarching indicators are supported by a further 66 public health indicators to help focus understanding of progress year by year. The public health observatories, led by the London Health Observatory, have been commissioned by the Department of Health to produce data for the 2010/11 baseline. To support this work, we have collated and benchmarked all the indicators for London where data is currently available. The data contained in the London PHOF matches the technical specification set out in the DH guidance and is the latest available for each indicator.

The London PHOF has been integrated into the London Health Programmes Health Needs Assessment Toolkit and includes: an overview of all of the PHOF indicators, an explanation of indicator inclusion/exclusion, excel data spreadsheets for all indicators included in the London PHOF and, where possible, links to the indicator within the HNA toolkit.

We aim to add more indicators to the London PHOF as data becomes available and plan to include all PHOF indicators within the HNA toolkit over time.

We hope that the London PHOF will be useful to practitioners, local authority and public health professionals and GP commissioners. If you have any comments, please contact hna@londonhp.nhs.uk.
